Cattle Egret Survey – Sunday 19th March 2017

Cattle Egrets, St Erth 16032017 (P.Freestone)A co-ordinated survey of the number of Cattle Egrets currently in the county was undertaken by volunteers today (19/03/2017) with the following results:

Frenchman’s Creek – 35+

St Clement – 20+

Loe Pool – 16

Devoran – 3

St Erth – 3

Cattle Egret (P.Freestone)

Cattle Egret (P.Freestone)

This gives us a roundabout figure of 77+ individuals. There was no count from the following usual roosts and sites. The Gannel which has held 6 bird recently, Sancreed which has had 3 birds (that could be the St Erth birds), Bude Marshes up to 5 birds, Cearhays Castle, Ruan Lanihorne and other sites where up to three birds were also not covered. The Tehidy CP bird has been present for weeks and could well have been there. So as a total it looks like there could easily be over a hundred individuals across the county.
