Cornwall Birding

Below are a few excellent images of Roseate and Little Terns that graced the beach between Marazion and Long Rock yesterday, 18th May. Thanks to Mark Halliday for submitting them.

Todays Birding highlights in Cornwall include:
The Lizard - WOODCHAT SHRIKE west of The Lizard at Caerthillian Cove. Follow track west from the village then follow footpath to bottom towards stream and turn left towards coast path for 200yrds.
Cot Valley - GOLDEN ORIOLE (male) singing in garden just east of Cot Manor this afternoon tho elusive.

No rarities have been found on this date in Cornwall

A Wilson’s Phalarope was at Marazion in 1991 remaining until 4th July.

A Black Stork was at Porthgwarra in 1988 and a European Bee-eater was at Sennen in 2003.

A Rose-coloured Starling was at Helston in 1984 and a SOFT-PLUMAGED PETREL was seen by seawatchers at Gwennap Head, Porthgwarra in 1996.

A Lesser Grey Shrike was at Allet near Truro in 1961.

A ‘biggie’ in the wader department was the LONG-TOED STINT at Marazion in 1970. The bird stayed for only two days. Another is long overdue.

A Red-footed Falcon was at St Colomb Major in 1994 and Marazion held a Black-winged Stilt for two days in 1963. A Red-headed Bunting at Menheniot in 1993 was resigned to Catagory ‘D’ by the BBRC.

A Great Reed Warbler was at Marazion for three days in 1963.

A Red-footed Falcon was at Croft Pascoe, The Lizard in 1989 until 5th.

No rarities have been found on this date in Cornwall.

A Red-footed Falcon was at Bearah Tor in 1985 and an Alpine Swift was at Sennen in 2002.

A BLUE-CHEEKED BEE-EATER was star find at Kennack Sands in 1989. A Great-white Egret was at Marazion in 2002 and a Dusky Warbler was at Coombe, Fowey for twenty days in 2004.

A Squacco Heron was at Portmellon in 2004 until 4th June.

A LESSER KESTREL was at St Ives in 1968.
