Truro - *AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER* in ploughed field at Shortlanesend with 300 Golden Plover.

On This Day in History - 20th October
A Wilson’s Petrel was seen off St Ives Island in 1970 and a Baird’s Sandpiper was at Marazion in 1965. A Pechora Pipit was a two day bird at Land’s End in 1990 but the Dusky Warbler at St Leven was more obliging staying until 28th.

Todays Birding highlights on the Isles of Scilly include:
St Mary’s - BLACKPOLL WARBLER (2) still, GREY-CHEEKED THRUSH, RB Flycatcher (2), Richards Pipit over watermill flew towards Tolls Island and another by telegraph just west of Longstone track. RADDE’S WARBLER at Porth Helick Pool from seaward hide at 16.55hrs.

A comparitively quiet day for rarities on this date. An American Wigeon was at Stithians in 1988 and a Rose-coloured Starling was at St Levan in 1993. Fourty-three years ago in 1964, a White-rumped Sandpiper was at Devoran. Bird of the date however goes to the Sociable Plover at Davidstow Airfield in 1987.

Goodwill Raises Wildlife Garden Funds
The Blyth’s Pipit on Tresco could have proved a little harder to see today had it not been for the goodwill of the Staff and Children at Tresco and Bryher Primary School. They agreed to have playtime elsewhere so that the Pipit wasn’t flushed.

The yanks were again out in force today with American Golden Plover at Davidstow Airfield in 1987, Lesser Yellowlegs at Stithians in 1969, Red-eyed Vireo at Trevail in 1987 and last but certainly not least, a NORTHERN PARULA at Penlee Point in 1985. Radde’s Warblers were at Porthgwarra in 1988 and Nanjizal in 1989.
